About

What CapLab is.

The platform for organizational capacity — where institutions and the funders who back them assess where they stand, understand what it means, and build what's missing.

CapLab stands for Capacity — Analysis & Building. It exists because the same question keeps surfacing across the development sector, and it's rarely answered well: how strong is this organization, really — and what would make it stronger?

Most organizations only find out when it's too late — when a due-diligence process flags a gap, when funding doesn't renew, when a system fails under pressure. CapLab turns that guesswork into a clear, structured, evidence-based picture: a diagnosis across ten dimensions of institutional health, benchmarked and prioritized, with a practical path forward.

Assess. Understand. Build.

The name is the method. We assess capacity through a rigorous, structured diagnostic. We help organizations understand what the results actually mean — for their work and for their funders. And we help them build what's missing, through tools, guidance, and expert support.

A Complexia platform

CapLab is built and run by Complexia, a research and advisory institution that helps organizations and individuals navigate complex situations scientifically. CapLab is Complexia's platform for the organizational level — the sister to Reconversion Lab, which does the same for individuals navigating career reinvention.

Both grow from the same conviction:

We don't simplify complexity. We navigate it.

Built from real experience

CapLab's framework isn't a textbook maturity model. Its ten dimensions and their indicators are drawn from years of hands-on organizational assessment, capacity building, and program work across NGOs, CSOs, government institutions and donor portfolios in fragile and transitional contexts — with the field experience to know which gaps actually matter, and why.

Behind CapLab is Complexia's network of senior experts and researchers, convened around each engagement to bring the precise mix of disciplines a problem needs.
